Really nice story about two women trying to get their Halloween costume to the next level, by using some spells from a spell book. It just turns out, that the spells actually involve a bit of dark magic, which causes the costumes to be a bit more difficult to remove, than the two would like.

“Avani? Can you swear to total secrecy on this? I want to show you something!”

Eva smiled eagerly at her best friend, but Avani wasn’t so sure if she like where this was going. Her ideas had gotten them in trouble before.

“I guess?”

“No, I’m serious! This could get me in a lot of trouble if you go blabbing about this to anyone. You cannot tell a single soul about what I’m about to show you! This is going to blow your mind and change the way you see the world!”

“Cause… you know weed is legal in this state now, right?”

“Nope! This is wayyyy better than weed! I mean it’s not drugs at all! Stop looking at me like that! Jeez, Avani! Never mind. Do you promise to never tell anyone else in the whole world about this? This is serious!”

“Uhh… okay. I’m not promising I won’t try to talk you out of whatever this is, but sure, I promise to keep it between us.”

“Okay!” Eva opened up her backpack and slammed a large packet of papers onto the table. “My uncle, Malachi… IS A WIZARD!!!”

“Like… a white supremacist?”

“NO! For fuck’s sake, Avani! Of course not! No, he’s an actual wizard! The kind that casts spells! And these are the pages from some of his spell books!”

“Okay…? These don’t really look like spell books to me,” she said, leafing through one of the staple-bound packets.

“Have you ever seen a real spell book before? What’s a spell book supposed to look like, then?”

“I don’t know, ancient? Leather-bound? Not written in English?”

These were photocopies of someone’s handwriting. The original spiral binding was still visible on most of the pages. They looked more like someone’s college notes than what Eva claimed they were. Still, the notes seemed to be talking about rather new-age sounding things: dreams and spiritual power and the like...
