Drone by Dakra-Dhark
This fantastic little drone story by Dakra-Dhark details a startup process of a drone, while it's monitored by her owner. Barely remembering anything, but getting the distinct feeling something was missing or wrong and trying to recall what, she immediately hears some static in her ears and the voice in her head tells her, she shouldn't be doing that. The drone then gets ready to follow her supervisor's instructions and begins putting on the fake mask and gloves, that look like real skin. Covering up everything with the rest of the clothes while also downloading the personality, that feels oddly familiar to her, related to the person the mask depicts, she's finally ready with not one part of her completely seamless latex body or smooth helmet visible any more.
A large metal slab hissed open in a dimly lit room, white smoke pouring out of the rapidly-forming opening to reveal a figure laying inside. Their entire body was sleek and non-descript, a feminine form concealed completely by a layer of glistening black. This even extended towards and around their head, any semblance of a face or hair hidden under a featureless blank screen and integrated helmet. [System Initializing…] displayed in soft blue on the figure’s visor, similarly colored lines trailing along the dark steel floor and walls of an otherwise empty room.
The drone took a deep breath in and out. Its consciousness began to slowly return to it, programs and processes flashing across its vision rapid-fire before being logged in the back of its mind. The feeling of what could be considered waking up was a unique one for the drone - a momentary rush of energy followed by a peaceful calm as their systems booted up. In a way it was like a human waking up after thinking they were falling, but without the realization of what they were dreaming of. Drones didn’t dream...
