This story has a prequel written by Paraortometea: A modern farm.
When it started raining cats and dogs I had just decided that not only did I not know anymore where I was, I didn't even know anymore where I was going. I got lost about fifteen minutes before I would have reached my destination, as my phone told me just before it quit on me. It quit, because the charged sparked and threw out smoke when I plugged it into the dashboard. And didn’t charge the phone, of course.
Without a phone I couldn’t navigate and I couldn’t call anyone, but I had memorized the rest of the trip, or so I thought. Until about an hour after I should have reached my destination. Another hour later I decided to head back home, but couldn’t find that way, either. About another hour later, with the rain still trying to drown the world, I was running low on fuel and I couldn’t remember having seen a fuel station anytime in the last hours.
You’re probably thinking: Men! Always too proud to stop and ask for directions. Well, maybe, but there was also another reason why I was somewhat reluctant to talk to strangers. But more on that later. And after the storm started, there was nobody to be found on the road, anyway.
Low on fuel and totally lost, the farm with its lit up buildings looked very inviting. I also didn’t want to get stranded somewhere in the nowhere in the middle of a rainy night without fuel, without water and without food. So I pulled together my courage, stopped the car and stared out into the rain. Then I shrugged, smiled and got out to walk to the open door of what looked like a vehicle shed. I’ve seen shadows moving within and heard mechanical noises of heavy machinery being moved about, so I expected to find someone there...
